The Canadian used his opportunism to triumph in the Climate Pledge Arena.
The Montreal side scored four goals on their first eight shots and defeated the Seattle Kraken 4-2 on Tuesday.
Johnathan Kovacevic, Cole Caufield, Josh Anderson and Rem Pitlick scored for the Canadian (13-11-2).
Martin Jones made 12 saves from the Kraken net while his counterpart Jake Allen saved 31 shots in the win.
It was the first meeting between last auction’s first pick, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Shane Wright, who has long been a favorite to be the draft first pick.
When Wright scored for the first time in the NHL, Slafkovsky followed through with an assist.
Wright played his first NHL game since November 5. On Monday, the Kraken called him up from the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the American Hockey League.
Jared McCann also scored for the Kraken (15-7-3). The Seattle squad, who had just won seven straight games, suffered a second straight setback.
The Canadian has had to deal with the absences of forwards Sean Monahan and Brendan Gallagher.
Monahan left the game against the Canucks in the second half and did not return to the game. His health will be checked upon his return to Montreal.
On Gallagher’s side, the team announced earlier today that the fiery winger will remain on the sidelines for at least two more weeks. He was injured on November 29 against the San Jose Sharks.
Martin St. Louis’ men have three days off and return to action on Saturday at the Bell Center against the Los Angeles Kings.
quality before quantity
After a slow start on both sides, the Kraken began to zip around the Canadian’s jailer’s net.
However, Allen got ahead of Wright by extending the pad after a cross pass in the second half of the first period.
This allowed the Canadian to take the lead a few moments later.
After a faceoff won by Kirby Dach, Mike Matheson handed the puck to his partner Kovacevic and Kovacevic’s palm shot from the blue line caught Jones by surprise. The 25-year-old defender then scored his first goal at Bettman Circuit, giving the Canadian a 1-0 lead at 12:56 of the first period.
It was just a reprieve for Wright, who had yet to say his last word.
Wright, who accepted Oliver Björkstrand’s throw-in from behind the net and fired immediately, defeated Allen’s cover and scored his first NHL goal.
The 18-year-old center also stood out late in the engagement. Wright fired another shot at Allen at close range, but the latter won the third round between the two men.
The Canadian started the middle phase with a second wind. It hit the target twice in seven seconds.
After a dangerous pass from a Kraken player in his defending zone, Nick Suzuki intercepted the disc and waited before passing it to Caufield, who defeated Jones with a powerful one-timer. Like Thieves, Suzuki was instrumental in seven of Caufield’s 15 goals this season.
Dvorak then collected a loose puck on the edge of the Kraken zone, driving straight into the net before serving a precision lift pass to Anderson, who hit the target by shooting into the top of the net. The Canadiens went into the second third with a 2-12 lead two.
The Canadian continued to show opportunism at the end of the period. In a game of tic-tac-toe that ended in a pass from Joel Edmundson to Rem Pitlick, the Canadian scored for the fourth time with his eighth shot of the game. During this time, the Habs scored three times despite only four shots.
The Kraken believed in a comeback thanks to McCann’s 12th goal of the season, which diverted the puck between Allen’s pads with less than a second left at halftime.
The Canadian managed to close the game in the third period, in addition to doubling his total shots to finish the game on 16 shots.
