According to the organizers and Formula 1, the fires that are currently ravaging the forests in northern Quebec should not affect the good course of the race in Montreal next week.
Next weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix would be in no danger after wildfires and resulting smoke erupted in several parts of North America, with outbreaks just 800km from Montreal.
Wildfires in Quebec fueled by high winds have driven smoke into parts of the country and the northeast and central US.
Poor air quality affected flights and disrupted some sporting or entertainment events, raising fears for the next round of the World Cup in Montreal in eight days.
“Formula 1 has spoken to the local promoter and has given assurances that next weekend’s event at Montreal’s Gilles Villeneuve circuit will not be affected by the wildfires.” says the sports directorate in a press release.
Montreal air quality has improved in recent days after falling sharply earlier in the week due to smoke from wildfires. The same smoke is over New York today (photo above).
First free practice for the Canadian Grand Prix takes place on Friday 16 June and the smoke should have cleared by then, although the fires are still not under control.
