Endometriosis is a serious chronic condition that is associated with severe pain, especially during periods, and can affect a person’s ability to become pregnant. People with endometriosis symptoms can experience significant delays in diagnosis and access to care because of a lack of awareness of endometriosis and the fact that endometriosis symptoms often resemble those of other health problems. All people in Canada, regardless of their health status, should have access to safe and effective reproductive and sexual health services.
That’s why today, Julie Dabrusin, Member of Parliament for Toronto-Danforth and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, speaking on behalf of the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health of Canada, announced more than $1.6 million in funding to Endometriosis Network Canada and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada to raise awareness of endometriosis, improve access to essential sexual and reproductive health services, and reduce barriers to accessing care by providing resources for people living with endometriosis and health professionals.
Funding for these projects is provided by Health Canada’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund (SRHF). The FSSR was established in Budget 2021 with an initial investment of $45 million to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services for people in Canada who face the greatest barriers. The government has allocated an additional $36 million to the FSSR in Budget 2023. Our government will continue its work to ensure health services are accessible, equitable and affordable for all Canadians.
