The Canadian Army is increasingly concerned about its recruitment problems

Thousands of job offers

The armed forces are sounding the alarm about their recruitment problems: they lack recruits to fill the thousands of positions in their ranks.

The problem is so bad that the senior officer in charge of recruitment and training calls the situation a crisis.

Brigadier General Krista Brodie said the Army had received only about half the applications needed to meet its goal of adding 5,900 new recruits to its ranks this year.

About every tenth military post is vacant. This shortage may also affect future hierarchy as there are fewer individuals available for advancement.

HR managers are trying to better understand this problem and find solutions. They plan to offer financial incentives to improve the compatibility of family and career. They also want the army to be better perceived by the population.

The Canadian Armed Forces also want to increase the recruitment of underrepresented groups, such as women and Aboriginal people, into their ranks.
