The 2023 Toyota Corolla remains one of the most popular sedans in Canada and has received a number of changes for the current model year that should increase its appeal.

The Corolla sedan is offered in eight versions and can be ordered with two powertrains and, for the first time in several decades, with all-wheel drive.

The Corolla’s standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, mated to a direct-shift CVT transmission that features a physical first gear for easier starts.

This combination results in a fuel consumption of just 6.7 L/100 km in combined city/highway driving, but those who want even more efficiency can opt for hybrid drive on most models.

The Corolla Hybrid uses a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, paired with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery to deliver 138 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque while maintaining combined fuel economy at 4.7 L /100 km to hold.

Available exclusively on the hybrid version, all-wheel drive uses a rear-axle-mounted electric motor to send power to the rear when needed.

Here’s what each trim level includes:

L CVT

The most affordable 2023 Corolla sedan is the L CVT, which starts at $25,804. This model includes features such as keyless entry, automatic high beam, traffic sign information, adaptive cruise control at full speed, lane departure warning with steering assist, a pre-crash system, an immobilizer and an 8-inch touchscreen for the Toyota multimedia infotainment system with Safety Connect, an audio system with six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, lateral traction assist, torsion beam rear suspension, automatic up and down movement for each window, 4.2-inch driver information display, 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, LED headlights and door mirrors heated.

THE CVT

The LE CVT version ($26,804) adds things like lighted mirrors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, electric parking brake, heated front seats, automatic climate control, 16-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, and a wiper deicer.

This model is available with a $2,050 LE upgrade package that also includes a smart key with push-button start, wireless charging, heated leather steering wheel, power sunroof, wheel locks and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The hybrid

The most affordable Corolla Hybrid in 2024 is the LE Hybrid for $29,104, which offers the same features as the gas-powered Corolla LE except for double wishbone rear suspension, driver information display, 7-inch driver and variable intermittent wipers.

LE AWD Hybrid

This $30,604 version is the cheapest way to get all-wheel drive for the 2023 Corolla. The addition of an electric motor on the rear axle and a heated leather steering wheel are the only changes compared to the LE Hybrid.

SE CVT

Drivers wanting a sportier Corolla can choose the SE CVT version for $28,404. Based on the LE CVT model, this model includes the smart key entry and start system, Service Connect, Remote Connect, a sequential shift mode and paddle shifters for the transmission, a gear selector driving mode, double wishbone rear suspension with a leather-trimmed steering wheel, sport fabric upholstery , premium LED headlights, fog lights, rear spoiler, integrated signal lights, wheel locks, 16-inch rims, windshield wipers with variable interval switching and unique front and rear bumpers.

The $2,750 SE upgrade package gets access to wireless charging, a heated steering wheel, power sunroof and 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels.

SE Hybrid AWD

The next model in the lineup is the $33,004 SE Hybrid AWD, which includes all the trimmings of the gasoline-powered SE upgrade package, plus a 7-inch driver information display and 18-inch black alloy wheels.

XSE CVT

The most expensive 2023 gas-powered Corolla is the XSE CVT, starting at $33,504. This model comes standard with wireless charging, 3-year Drive Connect, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, adjustable driver lumbar support, 8-way power driver seat, Softex upholstery, 7-inch digital driver information display, door sills, luggage net, Premium -LED combination taillights, electric sunroof, a rear bumper protector and 18-inch dark gray rims. Like the SE, this model features different front and rear bumpers that give it a more dynamic appearance.

XSE AWD Hybrid

At the top of the 2023 Corolla sedan is the $37,404 XSE AWD Hybrid, a model that shares all the characteristics of the gas-powered XSE with the exception of its powertrain.
