The 155,000 PSAC members will go on general strike on April 19th

Across the country, more than 155,000 Treasury Department and Canada Revenue Agency officials will go on strike on April 19.

“It’s really not what we were hoping for, but we have exhausted all our avenues to try to reach a fair and equitable settlement with the government,” said PSAC national president Chris Aylward. “More than ever we need fair wages, good working conditions and an inclusive environment. It is now clear that the only way to get there is to show the government that we cannot wait any longer. »

The strike will be called at one second midnight (00:01 ET) on April 19. It will be one of the largest strikes in the country’s history.

Pickets will be set up at more than 250 locations across the country. Our members and allies can use our to find a picket line near them location tool.

Nearly a third of federal employees will go on strike, meaning people can expect slowdowns and disruption to government services like labor insurance, immigration and passport applications starting tomorrow. There is also talk of a complete halt to the processing of income tax returns, the disruption of supply activities and trade exchanges at ports and airports, and delays at border crossings, where administrative staff will also go on strike.

“We are at the beginning of an historic strike, but the PSAC negotiating teams will remain at the negotiating table as they have for weeks,” said Chris Aylward. We stand ready to reach a fair and equitable settlement once the government is willing to make us a reasonable offer. »

Negotiations between the PSAC and the Treasury Board began in June 2021, but an impasse was declared in May 2022.
