Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the following statement today on World Mental Health Day:
“Today we celebrate it World Mental Health Day, an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues that can affect us all. We all know someone who has mental health issues, or we may have issues ourselves. Whether it’s you, a family member or a friend, we make sure everyone has access to the mental health care they need, when they need it.
“Mental health is health. In the last two years, depression and anxiety have increased in Canada. That’s why we created the portal Wellness Canada and the app wellbeing Provide free, needs-based access to direct counseling and community support services, as well as a vast network of other mental health resources. From coast to coast, we invest in projects that support those who need it most. At the same time, we are working with provinces and territories to develop national standards to improve mental health care.
“This year, the theme of World Mental Health Day is ‘Making mental health and well-being a global priority for all’. We work with our global partners to ensure the delivery of mental health care around the world. This includes supporting our experienced humanitarian partners in providing emergency life-saving assistance, such as mental health support services in emergencies, and in meeting the mental health needs of people in low- and middle-income countries, especially young people.
“Today, on behalf of the Canadian government, I thank everyone who provides valuable service to support mental wellbeing in Canada and around the world. Let’s continue to take care of ourselves and others when we need it most. That’s what Canadians do. And let’s continue to work together to end stigma and improve mental health care for all. »
