Statement by the Prime Minister on the Vietnamese New Year

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the following statement today to mark the Vietnamese New Year, also known as Tết Nguyên Đán:

“Over the next few days, Vietnamese communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate Tết Nguyên Đán, the Lunar New Year, and the arrival of the Year of the Cat.

“Vietnamese New Year, better known as Tết, is a time to give thanks for the achievements of the past year, reflect on the experiences and challenges it has brought, and welcome the renewal of spring. Families and friends will gather to be inspired by the cat, which symbolizes hope and success. They will pay homage to their ancestors, share a special meal and exchange wishes for happiness and prosperity in the year to come.

“The Lunar New Year is also a time to celebrate the important contributions Vietnamese Canadians have made and continue to make across the country that build Canada’s strength, prosperity and resilience. With anti-Asian racism on the rise, it’s up to all of us to speak out against hate and celebrate the diversity Canada has to offer.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I wish all those celebrating this occasion health, happiness and peace in the Year of the Cat.

“Chúc mừng năm mới. »
