Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the following statement today to commemorate the mass shooting in Nova Scotia three years ago:
“Three years ago, on April 18-19, 2020, the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history shook Nova Scotia and across Canada. On this sad day we remember the people we lost and their memories live on in our hearts. Our thoughts are with all those forever affected by this senseless tragedy.
“Canadians across the country have come together in grief and solidarity following this attack. As Canadians, we have stayed true to ourselves by holding vigils to commemorate the victims and mobilizing to support those affected. Today, as we continue to honor those who have died, I am inspired by the strength and resilience shown by families, survivors and all Nova Scotians.
“Last month, the Mass Accidents Commission presented its final report. As we review federal government recommendations and act accordingly, we will work closely with the Nova Scotia government and affected individuals and communities to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again. The Canadian government has already taken steps to keep Canadians safe in their communities, and we’ve invested in improving mental health support – for example, by creating the portal Wellness Canada and the app wellbeingwho provide 24/7 access to support ranging from information to contacting professionals.
“Today Canada commemorates the 22 people, including a pregnant woman, whose lives came to an abrupt end on one of the darkest days in Canadian history. We will never forget her. To the people of Nova Scotia: We know the pain, trauma and heartbreaking loss will never entirely go away, but today and every day we are with you. »
