Six Canadians have died in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, according to Global Affairs Canada’s latest report on Thursday. The death of another person “with close ties to Canada” was also reported.
The findings were clarified Thursday by Global Affairs Canada. However, the identity of the latest victim was not revealed due to confidentiality reasons. Two more Canadians are still missing, the same number as the last update.
“Global Affairs Canada is supporting seven Canadian families of those who died during the current conflict, as well as the families of two missing Canadians,” the organization said in a news release Thursday.
Currently, more than 5,765 citizens on the list of Canadians abroad are registered in Israel, 451 Canadians are registered in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and 17,135 are registered in Lebanon.
The military wing of the Palestinian Hamas estimated Thursday that nearly 50 Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip have been killed by Israeli strikes since the war began on Oct. 7.
After carefully avoiding calling for a ceasefire since the start of the conflict, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau finally declared earlier this week that he supported “humanitarian pauses.” He still refuses to call for a ceasefire, something more than thirty federal elected officials have been demanding for a week.
