Seven minutes the Habs sink

The Montreal Canadiens conceded four goals in seven minutes and lost 4-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre on Saturday night.

The Habs’ disastrous streak began in the opening moments of the second period. Max Domi scored the first goal, deflecting a point shot behind Samuel Montembeault’s back.

Less than 20 seconds later, Auston Matthews scored his 64th goal and collected his 100th point of the season.

Matthew Knies and Bobby McMann then extended the visitors’ lead. The second-round success ended Montembeault’s match. The Quebec goalkeeper was replaced in front of the net by Cayden Primeau after allowing four goals on 12 shots.

Before the middle period was over, Nick Suzuki gave the fans a reason to celebrate. The captain of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge took advantage of a numerical advantage and an excellent lay-up by Juraj Slafkovsky to score his 33rd goale in 2023-2024. This is also his 20the goal since the beginning of February, which puts him third in the NHL in that regard.

Cole Caufield also played his part in this crazy second period. The sharpshooter brilliantly finished off a play by Mike Matheson. It was his third goal in as many games.

The Canadian will be back in action this Sunday when he faces the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
