The 55-year-old teamed up with popular rapper Snoop Dogg and businessman Neko Sparks and said he was very “excited” to be added to the National Hockey League’s (NHL) “first black-led ownership group.”

Separately, the Algonquin Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation confirmed Wednesday that it supports the Sparks’ candidacy. This Native American nation claims the territory of LeBreton Flats, a site being considered by senators for the construction of a future arena.

The board of directors of Senators Sports & Entertainment announced in November 2022 that a process to sell the team had been initiated. Interested parties had until last Monday to submit a purchase offer.

The Federal Capital team remains owned by the daughters of Eugene Melnyk, who died in March 2022 at the age of 62.
