TORONTO, the October 13, 2022 /CNW/ – Scotiabank invests $1.6 million in the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) at the Rotman School of Management and becomes a founding partner of the CDL apprenticeship program, empowered STEM careers for young women (including two-spirit, transgender and non-binary people) in high schools across the country.
This program aims to raise awareness of possible career paths and increase the likelihood of young girls, including dual-spirited, transgender and non-binary people, pursuing STEM, business or entrepreneurship. The funds will be used to expand the accessibility of the program CDLSTEM Apprentice, consistent with CDL’s mission to improve gender diversity in these disciplines. Scotiabank’s investment also includes the renewal of its sponsorship to drive programming within CDL’s core curriculum, e.g Canada in the fields of science and technology.
The program CDL apprentice fills an important gap in bringing students closer to STEM careers, says Michael Zerbs, Group Head, Technology and Operations, Scotiabank. Scotiabank is proud to contribute to the future employment opportunities and resilience of young girls+ from different regions of Canada.
Through its sponsorship of Scotiabank, CDL will provide travel bursaries to high school students from rural and underserved areas to access education and mentoring opportunities they would otherwise not have access to. CDL could also hire a person dedicated solely to promoting this program to all secondary schools Canada.
The program CDL apprentice wants to pique students’ curiosity and inspire them to consider careers in STEM, business or entrepreneurship, says Sonia Sennik, CEO of CDL. Our partnership with Scotiabank will allow us to reach more students across the country through this unique immersive learning experience.
The program CDL apprentice empowers students who identify with women to learn in an immersive, technology-enabled environment. It focuses on pathways to entrepreneurship and new technologies not explored in the secondary school curriculum, such as artificial intelligence, financial technology, blockchains, health and energy.
Some CDL interns will be invited to a global symposium on International Women’s Day that will be held Toronto in spring 2023. This summit will bring together the CDL community of business leaders, renowned scientists, engineers, economists and start-up founders from around the world to discuss the latest technologies and their experiences as entrepreneurs.
Applications for the 2022-2023 cohort of the program CDL apprentice can now be presented by young students aged 14-18, including bispirited, transgender and non-binary people. To make a request, write [email protected].
