The road was closed June 6-23 due to a wildfire east of Cathedral Grove Park near Port Alberni. It briefly reopened on Friday afternoon before closing around 8 p.m.
According to DriveBC, alternate lane traffic is possible near the Cameron Lake bluffs. The provincial transport ministry adds that passengers should expect congestion and plan their journeys accordingly.
The reopening delights remote communities
Ucluelet Mayor Marilyn McEwen was delighted with the initial announcement of Friday’s reopening. I have my fingers crossed that this happens
She says.
Both Tofino and Ucluelet were pretty quiet without the visitors. Now we’re going back to some normalcy.
The reopening was also eagerly awaited by the Nuu-chah-nulth nation’s council, said its president, Judith Sayers. We hope that our lives will return to normal […] When you know you can’t leave town, whether it’s for medical, business, family, or any other appointment, it’s daunting
She says.
The decline in tourism has also impacted local businesses, notes Jolleen Dick, president and CEO of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce.
She is now asking governments for help to support traders. Our community needs support […] We ask for financial support.
