For more than two weeks, mountains of rubbish bags have lined a leafy alley in the Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie district. The rubbish attracts squirrels, raccoons and worms and also makes the alley smelly, making the place unsanitary, lament several residents.
The alley between Rue Saint-Hubert and Avenue De Châteaubriand, between Rosemont and Bellechasse, has been unrecognizable since June 29th. Since then, garbage bags left on the west side of the artery have not been picked up by garbage collectors. On the east side, five meters further, everything is properly collected.
Diane, who lives on Avenue De Châteaubriand, contacted the municipality several times to find out why her garbage bags were no longer being collected. “I’ve been here for 34 years and I’ve never had this problem. If there’s a rule, they’ve been applying it for three weeks,” she told us Friday lunchtime.
The lady filed several complaints with the municipality, including one about unsanitary conditions. But without success.
“I didn’t retire to manage garbage cans! ‘ she started, clearly annoyed.
For Tifenn, a resident of Saint-Hubert Street, the presence of trash is a safety concern. “Yesterday with the tornado warning, we were afraid that the sacks and debris would fly off and cause damage,” she explains.

The 311 Service Center and District Mayor François Limoges’ office have been in charge since June 29, according to Denise Truchy, resident of Avenue De Châteaubriand.
“Thursday I ran after the garbage collector for answers and he said to me, ‘Call 311 Ostie!’ It’s an endless circle! ” she says desperately.
On Friday, Denise finally received an answer. She was informed by email that, in accordance with the statutes of the collection service, the municipality has asked the Derichebourg company, which is responsible for collection in the area, to stop collecting waste on the west side of the alley between rue Saint-Hubert and Avenue De Châteaubriand, from rue Rosemont to rue Jean-Talon, from June 29th.
Residents are now required to deposit their rubbish on the sidewalk of Avenue De Châteaubriand. The problem: They were never informed by the municipality. Three times they left their trash in the alley, which piled up week after week.
“It’s hell!” exclaimed Martine St-Jules, who has lived in the neighborhood for 34 years. We don’t mind if we have to put our rubbish outside our houses, but let’s say it! »
Friday noon, The press contacted the Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie district for answers to residents’ questions. A few hours later, late in the afternoon, a communications manager informed us that a team would be on site that evening to collect the rubbish. This reversal of the situation came after several complaints from citizens of the sector that went unanswered for two weeks.
In the same email, the district added that residences located on De Chateaubriand Avenue must dump their municipal waste “at the curb of the avenue, not in the alley.”
