TORONTO, Oct. 2, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Rogers Communications Inc. announced today that it has activated 5G service for transit riders in the busiest sections of the TTC subway.

To get the network ready for all TTC riders on October 2, Rogers conducted extensive testing, including live calls with Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly, who communicated with his father via FaceTime during the subway ride. Watch the video Here.

Starting today, customers of all major wireless carriers in Canada can connect to 5G service and stream calls, text messages and streams on the following sections of the TTC subway:

Line 1: All stations and tunnels in the “U” part of the city center as well as the Spadina and Dupont stations
Line 2: Thirteen stations from Keele to Castle Frank, plus tunnels between St George and Yonge stations

“We are excited to offer 5G connectivity to all metropolitan users,” said Tony Staffieri, president and CEO of Rogers. Our team worked day and night to implement an immediate solution to keep all riders connected on the busiest sections of the TTC subway. I am very proud of the Rogers Technology team as they continue to demonstrate innovation and ingenuity and bring innovative solutions to Canadians. Today’s announcement is another important milestone in our plan to make wireless services accessible across the metro network. »

“Our dedicated technical team was able to immediately present a solution. “This increased capacity and allowed Bell and Telus to join the network,” said Ron McKenzie, Rogers’ chief technology and information officer. For more than 10 years, Metro users have been excluded from cellular service, and the Rogers team is excited to make 5G service a reality for all of them today. »

In April, Rogers acquired the TTC subway cellular network from former operator BAI Canada. The company has committed to investing hundreds of millions of dollars to roll out 5G services and more reliable access to 911 in 75 subway stations and nearly 50 miles of rail. Today’s announcement marks the next step in the network modernization plan. The old network could not support all TTC riders and the areas served were extremely limited. Since taking over the network, Rogers has worked closely with the TTC to increase the cellular capacity of its networks and improve the quality of service to support traffic for all users.
