Revenu Québec pros give themselves an indefinite strike mandate

(Montreal) Revenu Québec’s 5,800 professionals have just signed a mandate for pressure tactics that can go as far as an indefinite strike.

The date on which this strike will be exercised has not yet been determined, but could well be in the middle of the tax return deadline.

These 5,800 workers are members of the Syndicate of Professionals of the Government of Quebec (SPGQ), a large union independent of central government. They work in the areas of administration, information technology, auditing, surveys and investigations, human resources, among others.

“All of this will be determined by our union bodies to find the right timing. What is certain is that we want to give the talks time to come to an agreement at the negotiating table and avoid this industrial dispute,” said Guillaume Bouvrette, President of the SPGQ, in an interview.

The pressure tactics mandate, which could go as far as an indefinite general strike, was accepted by 84%.

In fact, this is a new strike mandate for these professionals at Revenu Québec, as they have been on evening and weekend strikes since last September, Mr Bouvrette explained.

Despite this second mandate, he hopes that he will not have to go on strike.

“Our members did not give us this mandate lightly”, but the employment contract expired in spring 2020 and the numerous negotiation and arbitration talks did not make it possible to reach an agreement, he explained.

The main point of contention is the remuneration.

In the event of a strike, essential services are to be provided, in particular to maintain maintenance payments.
