Statistics Canada said Friday that retail sales in Canada rose 0.6% in September to $66.5 billion.
Vehicle and auto parts dealers recorded the largest increase of 1.5%.
Used car dealers saw the largest decline in the subsector, down 2%.
Core retail sales, which exclude gas stations and fuel retailers as well as automobile and parts dealers, fell 0.3% in September.
In terms of volume, retail sales rose 0.3% in September.
In the third quarter, retail sales rose 0.6%, while retail sales in volume terms fell 0.5%.
Core retail sales fell by 0.3% and food retail (-0.4%).
Provincially, New Brunswick (-0.2%) saw the largest decline in September, driven primarily by a decline in sales at vehicle and auto parts retailers.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, online retail sales fell 0.6% to $3.8 billion in September, accounting for 5.8% of total retail sales.
