Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha

Today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) business leaders meeting.

Prime Minister Trudeau thanked Prime Minister Prayut for hosting the APEC summit. Prime Minister Trudeau also spoke about Thailand’s efforts to promote sustainable and clean growth.

The leaders spoke about the positive and growing trade between Canada and Thailand and its huge potential for growth. They also highlighted the strong and growing ties between the peoples of the two countries.

The Prime Ministers discussed how a free trade agreement between Canada and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would promote prosperity and create good jobs for the middle class in two countries and across the region. They also discussed elevating Canada’s status to a strategic partner with ASEAN.

Prime Minister Trudeau spoke about Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy and the work we are doing to strengthen our relationship with Thailand and the wider region.

Leaders also discussed human rights, education and the importance of clean technologies and climate-friendly infrastructure to help prevent and manage the increasingly severe impacts of climate change in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Trudeau expressed Canada’s support for ASEAN’s efforts to end the crisis in Myanmar and reiterated Canada’s condemnation of the military regime’s grave human rights violations in Myanmar.

The Prime Ministers also exchanged views on Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and the serious impact of this conflict on food and energy security in the Indo-Pacific region and globally.
