Port of Vancouver traffic decreased in 2022

(Vancouver) The Port of Vancouver-Fraser Authority said on Monday that total freight volumes fell 3% last year as the global economy began to show signs of slowing.

The agency that oversees Canada’s largest port in Vancouver says grain and fertilizer exports surged in the second half, but gains were not enough to offset a slow start due to a poor harvest and supply chain problems.

Container imports also fell by 4% due to weaker consumer demand and excess inventories.

Despite the drop, Port Authority chief executive Robin Silvester argued there was an urgent need to build a new container terminal, which was approved by the federal cabinet last month but still needs various permits to move forward.

Mr Silvester pointed out that the drop in container traffic that started in December is giving a congested port some much-needed relief.

Cruising was one of the activities to make a strong comeback after a two-year pandemic hiatus, with a record 307 ships anchoring in the city.
