PGA: second straight title for Glover, four Canadians still alive

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —Lucas Glover had three long putts to stay alive in Round 4 of the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday. Then he scored his most important goal in extra time, beating Patrick Cantlay and winning the second tournament in a row.

With that, Glover continues his incredible journey of the last few weeks. The 43-year-old finished 112th in the FedEx Cup standings two weeks ago and was preparing for a holiday. Now he’s guaranteed to reach the FedEx Cup final and possibly be considered for the Ryder Cup.

Glover had a 20-foot par putt, another 30-foot bogey, and a final 12-foot par in the last six pennants. He handed over a card of 69(-1) to force overtime while Cantley played 64(-6) to put himself in front.

In fact, overtime ended with a shot from Cantley that was inches from perfect. Instead, the ball bounced off the bank before falling into the water. Meanwhile, Glover found the 18th driveway and needed two putts to par.

Glover became only the third player in his 40s to win two PGA Tour titles in as many weeks, after Kenny Perry (2003) and Vijay Singh, who won three times.

“When you fight for something or play well, you work hard,” Glover said. You never know when things will turn in your favor. And that changed very quickly for me.

Glover and Cantley combined for 275 (-15). England’s Rory McIlroy (65) and Tommy Fleetwood (68) took second place with an extra shot.

Before the final, the top 50 players will meet next week for the BMW Championship. This tournament will determine the top 30 players who will take part in the Tour Championship.

Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes made a devastating bogey on the 17th hole, eventually showing a 69(-1) card. This makes him the first eliminated player and ranks 51st in the FedEx Cup standings.

Four of his compatriots are still in the running. Nick Taylor (16th) and Corey Conners (25th) have good chances of reaching the final, while Adam Hadwin (37th) and Adam Svensson (39th) need to perform at their best in the BMW Championship to extend their season.
