The Pittsburgh Penguins have reportedly received permission from the Toronto Maple Leafs to speak with their former general manager, Kyle Dubas.
This was announced by the TSN network on Monday.
The Pens are looking for new leaders after firing GM Ron Hextall and Chairman Brian Burke last April. Both men were shown the way out after the club missed the playoffs for the first time in 16 seasons, going 40-31-11.
As for Dubas, the 37-year-old’s contract with the Leafs will not be renewed. His contract officially ends on June 30, when he was general manager of the Queen City organization since May 2018. He has worked for the Canadian club since July 2014.
During his season review after the Leafs were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs, Dubas said he has no intention of working for another National League team in 2024-24. He would not return to Toronto.
“I have no intention of going anywhere else. “I’m coming back to Toronto or taking a break,” he said. You won’t see me anywhere else next week. I can’t do that to my family after the year we’ve just had.”
It remains to be seen if the penguins can change his mind.
