Cracked by injuries, Paul Byron is still clinging to his career as a professional ice hockey player despite the pain he is in.
The Montreal Canadiens forward, known for his speed, said during Friday’s team briefing in Brossard that he still couldn’t walk without pain. The Franco-Ontarian is struggling to recover from hip surgery he underwent in the summer of 2021.

Still, he doesn’t want to hang up his skates after assuring staff that he wants to stay in Montreal even if he becomes a free agent. The 33-year-old athlete has yet to speak to his family, advisor or doctor about his retirement.
“I’m not ready to make a decision. Maybe in a week, a month. […] My body gives me no more than yesterday. I’m looking to the future, I don’t know what I’m going to do yet,” said Byron, who remained very neutral.
“I could play a role in player development,” he added in reference to his future. […] I think there is a place for me to help young people.”
The left winger played his last games with the Canadiens in April 2022. He has not played a full season since 2017-2018. Byron recovered from waivers in 2015 and has 208 points in 521 career games.
