In a statement, Health Secretary Sylvia Jones says the deal includes increased payments for certain OHIP-insured benefits, as well as eye exams for welfare recipients, without disclosing the amounts.
The agreement also lists a number of eligibility changes, including people aged 65 and over whose eye exam will be done every 18 months instead of once a year, unless they don’t have an eye condition such as macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetes.
Optometrists withdrew from provincial-insured eye care services in September-November 2021 amid disputes over how much they would be reimbursed.
The provincial health plan covers annual eye exams for residents under 20 and over 64 and residents with special health conditions.
Optometrists said the province underfunded the services covered by OHIP, leaving them paying about 45 percent out of pocket.
