Ottawa – Employment was little changed in Canada in November, with the unemployment rate falling 0.1 percentage point to 5.1%.
Employment across the country increased by 10,000 and among core-age women aged 25 to 54, according to Statistics Canada. It fell among young males aged 15 to 24 and changed little in the other major demographic groups.
Statistics Canada adds that Quebec’s unemployment rate hit a new record low of 3.8%.
The federal agency says Quebec employment rose 28,000, or 0.6%, in November. The observed employment gains were concentrated in the Montreal region, where employment increased by 1.1% and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.2%.
Ontario employment was little changed in November. The unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage points to 5.5%.
The unemployment rate in New Brunswick rose from 6.7% in October to 7.3% in November. Over the same period, it rose from 4.9% to 6.2% in Prince Edward Island but fell from 6.7% to 6% in Nova Scotia.
Separately, Statistics Canada reports that Canada-wide 12-month average hourly wage growth for workers remained above 5% in November for the sixth straight month, up 5.6%, or $0.71, to 32 from November 2021. reach $11.
