Nothing is going well for Denis Shapovalov

Denis Shapovalov may blame the whims of Mother Nature for his poor performance against Ugo Humbert on Friday, but the result is the same as the Canadian suffered another singles defeat, this time at Indian Wells.

After several rain stops, “Shapo” and his rival were finally able to finish their evening’s match in California. However, the Ontarian was eliminated in the second set in a 7-5, 6-4 loss.

Shapovalov, 25th seed, has a habit of getting in the way. He looked down as he took a 3-1 lead in the first set and 4-1 in the second.

The Maple Leaf representative committed no fewer than 14 double faults in just 1 hour and 39 minutes of play, and his inconsistency in possession gave Humbert 11 break points.

The Frenchman, ranked 77th in the world, had to convert just four of those chances to salvage the win. He also fouled just 12 times while Shapovalov, with 29 unforced errors, did nothing to help his cause.

Since competing in the third round of the Australian Open, the 23-year-old athlete has also lost to Wu Yibing, Michael Mmoh and Taylor Fritz. He has won only one match in this series: a three-set win over Miomir Kecmanovic in Acapulco.

However, Shapovalov will not pack his bags on Friday. Together with FĂ©lix Auger-Aliassime he reached the knockout stage of the doubles table. The Canadians meet Lucas Miedler and Cameron Norrie on Sunday.

-Also, at the end of the afternoon, Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu and Yulina Putintseva were eliminated in the women’s doubles tournament. They lost 7-6 (3) and 6-4 to Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez.
