The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (LHJMQ) general assembly has voted in recent weeks for a full ban on fighting for next season.
However, the new rules that will result in an automatic match penalty are not far off.
Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki is among those who believe the QMJHL should leave the fighting in place.
“I never fought but obviously I got hit a couple of times and the guys stood up for me,” he said during his press conference on Monday.
“Fighting means you can’t do what you want on the ice without consequences.”
According to him, the QMJHL would be making a mistake if they ratified the whole thing at the circle’s next meeting next June.
“I don’t think they should take them off,” he added. I’m not a thug, but guys who stand up for their teammates show that everyone can be taken care of.
“We’ll see how the QMJHL comes out of this. [si elle va de l’avant]but I think fighting is definitely a big part of hockey.”
