The NHL on Wednesday released the names of the three players still in the running for the award, demonstrating the community’s commitment. The winner will be determined by a panel of executives led by Commissioner Gary Bettman and announced at the circuit’s closing gala on June 26 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. He will receive $25,000 to donate to a charity of his choice, while the other two finalists will receive $5,000 each.
With the Calgary Flames, Backlund also supported the Alberta Association’s fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). His mother-in-law has died from it and the club’s assistant general manager Chris Snow is struggling with the terminal illness. On the Edmonton Oilers side, Nurse has contributed to the participation and inclusion of many young people from Aboriginal communities and is an ambassador for the Right to Play program. Finally, Lee, captain of the New York Islanders, notably supported the organization Jam Kancer in the Kan, which helps children and their families deal with cancer.
Among the 32 candidates originally announced in May were Boston Bruins Quebec veteran Patrice Bergeron and Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk. In 2022, PK Subban clinched the trophy in his final career season.
