New Ontario Chief Justice: Long Live Diversity!

His appointment to the Ontario Court of Appeals made him the first black person to sit on a Court of Appeals in Canada. Prior to his appointment as a judge, he worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney in Peel and Toronto from 1991 to 1995, after which he opened his own practice specializing in criminal law.

In 2016, the Ontario Government commissioned Justice Tulloch to conduct comprehensive reviews, which resulted in the publication of two detailed reports, the Independent Review of Police Oversight Report (2017) and the Independent Street Checks Review Report (2018).

As Crown Prosecutor, Michael Tulloch was a member of the State Response Team for the Systemic Racism Commission. He also chaired a committee to review Osgoode Hall Law School’s admissions policy in 2006.

Justice Tulloch has served on the Education Committee of the Ontario Supreme Court, the National Judicial Institute and the Judicial Advisory Committee on International Engagement of the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs.

He was an emeritus member of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Toronto and Distinguished University Researcher at Center for Law and Politics from Ryerson University (now Metropolitan University of Toronto). He was a founding member and supporter of the Scholarship Foundation Second chance and Chairman of the Advisory Committee Black Business and Professional Association.
