National sports police gather in Lévis

From April 1st to 8th the 66th edition of the Canadian Police Curling Championship took place. For this third edition on Québec soil, the Etchemin Curling Club of Saint-Romuald hosted the competition, in which 12 teams from different Canadian provinces took part.

Scheduled for 2022 and postponed to 2023 due to the pandemic, the 66th edition of the Canadian Police Curling Championship was a success “all along the line,” said Serge Moineau, President of the Organizing Committee of the Lévis-based President of Etchemin Curling Club and Police Officer.

“Everything went very well, both in terms of organization and the opening and closing ceremonies. It was great,” he said.

Throughout the week of competition, the organization relied on a team of dedicated volunteers and was supported by a range of sponsors.

In addition, the public was invited to attend the competition and it responded in attendance. “We had a lot of visitors throughout the week and some teams even streamed the games live for their province on social media,” said Mr. Moineau, who was also a player for Team Quebec.

At the end of the week, the participating police athletes only had good words for this edition, which has been in development for a year and a half. According to Serge Moineau, this type of event greatly contributes to the influence of the Lévis curling club as well as the city of Lévis.

“The Canadian Police Curling Championship is a great tradition and everyone enjoys participating. We can meet, sit down, discuss and exchange ideas about the job, the sport, about everything and nothing. In the end we build connections and see each other again from year to year, it’s really a great friendly week with a good level of competition,” said the President of the Organizing Committee.

A strong commitment

The Canadian Police Curling Association also used their annual banquet to recognize Serge Moineau’s provincial-level dedication since 2007 by presenting him with a plaque. He also received the President-Host ring for the 2023 edition.

“It’s certainly heartwarming, we don’t meddle to receive awards like this, but it’s a nice pat on the back,” he shared.

Because the Canadian Police Curling Association is affiliated with Tourette Canada, a silent auction was held throughout the week, raising $3,000 for the national organization.

Lévis MNA Bernard Drainville also took the opportunity to donate $2,000 to Etchemin Curling Club.

“I am happy to support the Etchemin Curling Club and to participate financially in this major event. Curling is a wonderful sport that brings people together and strengthens social bonds. I am proud to contribute to the success of this event and to support the Etchemin Curling Club in its efforts to promote curling here in Lévis,” said the MP.

Results

As with the previous edition, Team Canada, made up of British Columbia police officers, won the championship by beating Team Ontario 7-1 in the grand finals. It was Team Manitoba that took the bottom step of the podium.

Note that Team Quebec narrowly missed the playoffs, finishing fifth overall in qualifying with six wins and five losses.
