Mpox epidemic | Canada to supply Africa with hundreds of thousands of vaccine doses

(Ottawa) Canada will supply the African continent with up to 200,000 doses of Imvamune vaccine against Mpox, the Canadian government announces.

These doses came from Canada’s existing vaccine stocks, a press release said.

The government wants to “strengthen health security on the African continent and contain the spread of Mpoxen,” said Minister for International Development Ahmed Hussein and his colleague in charge of health, Mark Holland.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) had called on donors who have such vaccines to make them available to countries that need them most.

There is currently an outbreak of Mpoxen in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country in Central Africa, and the disease has spread to surrounding countries.

According to the WHO, more than 120 countries have confirmed more than 103,000 cases of Mpox since the outbreak began two years ago. According to the organization’s latest count, 723 people have died from the disease in more than a dozen African countries.

African experts estimate they may need about 10 million vaccines to stop the ongoing outbreaks on the continent.
