More than 8.4 million acres burned, at least 622 active fires

Since the beginning of the year, more than 8 million hectares have gone up in smoke from fires in Canada.

As if Austria had disappeared from the map. Since the beginning of 2023, more than 8.4 million hectares have been burned in wildfires in Canada. according to the country’s Interagency Forest Fire Center (CIFFC) website. An impressive area, equal to 15% of metropolitan France and larger than Ireland.

The limit of six million hectares burned was exceeded on June 19 and seven million on June 26, just a week ago.

326 fires out of control

Therefore, despite the reinforcements sent by many countries, including France, the fires in Canada are increasing very quickly.

And the situation appears to be getting worse as of the 622 active fires identified nationwide, 326 are believed to be out of control.

A terrible situation that already makes 2023 a historic year in North America: it took only six months to break the record for the annual area burned in Canada.

Canadian wildfires have been in the news regularly for several weeks. Fumes released from the blaze caused two episodes of air pollution in the United States in June, dominating the skies of New York City.

The plume of smoke even crossed the Atlantic and flew over France last week, but didn’t significantly affect air quality in the old continent.
