To make playing their sport safer, the Canadian Football League (CFL) has made it mandatory for certain players to wear padded helmets during practice.
This additional protection, called “Guardian Cap”, must be worn by offensive and defensive players, running backs and linebackers. For other positions, including quarterbacks, this gear is optional.
On their website, the CFL states that the padded protection reduces the severity of a contact by 10% and by 20% when both players wear it. This makes it possible to reduce the risk of concussion associated with the practice of this discipline.
“Our players are the best ambassadors of our sport, on and off the field. We must continue to test new equipment, technology and best practices to ensure they enjoy a long career of physical and emotional achievement,” Commissioner Randy Ambrosie said in a statement.
This season, for the first time, collapsible medical tents are used on the team bench to give players privacy during medical examinations. The emergency teams also benefited from additional training in the off-season.
