A French airline catering company officially denies employing undocumented workers at its Montreal facilities or exploiting their precarious status.
Newrest, which prepares meals for airlines, said in an email that it complies “strictly” with Canadian and Quebec labor and immigration laws.
The company is named in a class action lawsuit alleging more than 400 people were lured to Canada by a Laval employment agency under false pretenses.
The lawsuit alleges that the majority of these people were lured into working for Newrest – even though they had no work permits – and were routinely paid below minimum wage and subjected to other abuses.
Newrest says it is taking these complaints seriously and is conducting a “further investigation.”
The company, which has been operating in Canada since 2010, says it has never been sanctioned by Canadian authorities.
