Young Canadian Mia Kupres continued to impress at the Repentigny International Junior Tennis Open on Thursday, easily reaching the semi-finals at Larochelle Park.
Kupres, seeded in seventh place, taunted her opponent, Slovakia’s Nina Vargova (4th), in two identical sets 6-1. The Edmonton native, who now lives in Montreal, had the upper hand thanks to her depth of the ball and the quality of her serve.
To reach the final, the representative of the 18-year-old Ahornblatt must have the German Ella Seidel (8th). She secured her ticket to the semifinals by defeating American Tatum Evans.
In the other semi-final, Italy’s Federica Urgesi (15th) meets Japan’s Sara Saito (5th).
For the boys, Belgian Alexander Blockx (6th) won his duel against Mexican Luis Carlos Alvarez Valdes (14th). He hasn’t lost a round since the tournament started.
“Luis is an excellent player who fought for every ball,” said the Belgian, according to a press release after his duel. I had to fight to win every point. My first lap was tough but once I got used to the course I felt better. ยป
Jeremy Jin (9th) will look to end that winning streak on Friday, while the other semi-final will feature Jack Loutit (12th) and Mihai Alexandru Coman (7th).
Jin and Loutit will have a busy day as they also face Canada’s Aleksandar Mitric and Sasha Rozin in the men’s doubles semifinals.
