Mexican and Canadian business leaders launch Canada-Mexico Business Summit

Preparation of the joint report for the Canada-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue

Last week, business leaders from Canada and Mexico met in Montreal and agreed to launch a Canada-Mexico Business Summit – an annual forum aimed at increasing bilateral trade and investment. The summit will bring together business leaders from both countries annually and serve as a private sector counterpart to an effort launched last month by the two governments to boost bilateral relations – the Canada-Canada Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (DEHN).

During the DEHN meeting, the two governments asked the Consejo Mexicano de Negocios (Business Council of Mexico) and the Business Council of Canada to prepare a joint report on private sector partnerships with concrete recommendations and to identify priority sectors for pilot programs.

This week, business leaders discussed a draft report to be presented to both governments later this year.

“Mexico is an extremely important economic partner for Canada, even if this relationship rarely receives the attention it deserves,” said Victor Dodig, president of the Business Council of Canada. “The Council has long worked closely with the Consejo Mexicano de Negocios on North American trilateral issues, along with our partners in the United States. But it is equally important for us to focus on the Canada-Mexico relationship. »

“Mexican and Canadian business leaders have made a serious effort to identify specific actions that we can implement or promote to strengthen relations between the two countries,” said Antonio Del Valle Perochena, president of the Mexican Council of Negotiations. “The goal is to further advance the strategic alignment of North American economies. To ensure a better quality of life for all North Americans, more trade and investment are essential.”
