Transition to interoperability

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced in mid-March that it was working on a new social network that is seen as a potential competitor to Twitter.

We are thinking about a decentralized and independent social network that allows the exchange of written messages in real timethe group announced in a statement sent to AFP.

According to the platformer site, the application would be designed to be interoperable with other networks of the same type, which would represent a major break with the previous strategy of the tech giants, who have always preferred closed environments with their own rules to use.

The choice of interoperability envisaged by Meta also stands out in Twitter’s approach: in December, its main shareholder, Elon Musk, briefly blocked the accounts of several netizens who shared links to other social networks, including Facebook, Instagram and Mastodon.

Twitter has drawn renewed criticism in recent days when it decided to limit verified accounts’ reading of tweets to 10,000 per day (new window)1000 for others and even 500 for new accounts, caps that should be raised quickly.

The declared goal of the decision is to limit the massive use of data from social networks by third parties, especially companies, and thus feed their artificial intelligence models.
