Every year on March 30th we celebrate World Bipolar Disorder Day. This day is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about bipolar disorder and how we can better understand and support those affected by this illness in our lives.
Approximately 3% of the Canadian population will develop bipolar disorder during their lifetime. Previously called “manic-depressive illness,” this mood disorder is often misunderstood. This can lead to increased isolation and stigmatization, making it more difficult for people with bipolar disorder to seek and receive diagnosis, treatment and other support.
The Government of Canada is committed to eliminating barriers related to stigma and improving the mental health of all Canadians. We will continue to invest in shared priorities with provinces and territories, including improving access to mental health services. Working together, we will support the integration of these services and supports into the healthcare system and enable people to access the mental health care they need.
I encourage Canadians seeking mental health support to visit Canada.ca/mental-health. Please know that you are not alone and that help is available no matter where you live.
