Memorial Cup: A loss that does not affect the Remparts

The Peterborough Petes, playing for survival at the Memorial Cup, surprised Quebec Remparts with a 4-2 win on Tuesday night at the Sandman Centre. Luckily for the Red Devils, this defeat has no consequences.

Already qualified for the Finals after their victories against the Kamloops Blazers and the Seattle Thunderbirds, Patrick Roy’s men played their form in that game. However, in their quest for redemption, the Montreal Canadiens’ gang of hope sent Owen Beck a message.

The Petes, champions of the Ontario Junior League, got the ball rolling midway through the second period with a goal from Tucker Robertson. Both teams scored five goals within 6:31.

For Quebec, James Malatesta – on his fourth win of the tournament – and Nathan Gaucher kept their luck. However, they never had the lead or even equalized.

For William Rousseau, it was a rare hard night’s work. The Remparts keeper gave up four times on 29 shots before being replaced by Quentin Miller in the third period.

Beck didn’t get a point from the Petes. In addition to Robertson, JR Avon, Avery Hayes and Connor Lockhart all hit the mark. The outcome of Wednesday’s meeting between the Blazers and Thunderbirds will determine which team advances to the semifinals and which has a tiebreaker.

The Remparts will have to wait until Sunday for their last game.
