Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis passionately defended defenseman David Savard after his team’s win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
Savard was handed a questionable penalty for tripping in the second half. The fat man lathered the referee afterwards, earning him ten additional penalty minutes.
“Have you seen the resumption of punishment? He has nothing there, St-Louis pleaded with reporters after the game. Savy plays such an honest game as a hockey player. He’s a guy who takes a lot of penalties, saves a lot of shots, who takes care of the team all the time. He’s not a guy who sucks on the ice. I kind of understand David.
“The referee did not see the resumption of this penalty. I said to him, “If you look at the recovery, you’ll understand his reaction.”
As for Juraj Slafkovksy’s dangerous move at Matt Luff’s expense in the third period, St-Louis admitted he wasn’t sure what to expect for the Slovakia striker, who could well be suspended.
“It’s learning.”
