LPHF: Montreal would have found its coach

The Montreal team of the new Professional Women’s Hockey League (LPHF) would be led by Nova Scotian Kori Cheverie.

Radio-Canada Sports said Wednesday. Director General Danièle Sauvageau has not yet confirmed the hiring.

Last week, the DG announced the arrival of the club’s first three players, attackers Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey and goalkeeper Ann-Renée Desbiens.

Cheverie knows the three ice hockey players very well, as she has been one of the assistants for the Canadian national team since 2021. She sat on the substitutes’ bench at the last two World Cups and the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Last June, the 36-year-old was given the position of guest coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2023-2024 season. Cheverie also had experience coaching the Canadian men’s team at the 2022 U18 World Cup.

The Montreal team, which still has no name and no home, will recruit the rest of its players next Monday. The auction, which will take place in Toronto, will last 15 rounds. A total of 268 players are available, including 146 attackers, 78 defenders and 44 goalkeepers.
