Logan Mailloux struggled to fully appreciate his first National Hockey League goal on Saturday night after a 4-3 loss to the New York Islanders.
Mailloux was particularly disappointed that he couldn’t beat Semyon Varlamov to keep the Montreal Canadiens alive in the shootout. His backhand shot missed the target, confirming the win for the Islanders.
“It’s good to score, but I should have scored at the end,” he said with a sigh. It’s frustrating, that’s for sure. It will definitely keep me up at night.”
The poor defenseman turned heads in the second period when he battled with Anthony Duclair in front of the net as the Islanders controlled the puck in Canadiens territory for nearly four minutes.
“Was it really four minutes?” Mailloux responded in astonishment. At least we got through it. Yes, we shouldn’t do that again…”
Mailloux felt he was gaining confidence as the game progressed. He also threw flowers to goalkeeper Cayden Primeau, who kept his team in the game with good saves in the second and third periods.
“Prime was incredible for us towards the end and throughout the game,” Mailloux noted. He was excellent and gave us a chance to win.”
