Leylah Fernandez is running out of magic in Bad Homburg

After her quick win two days ago, Leylah Fernandez fought much harder against Anna Blinkova in the second round of the Bad Homburg tennis tournament and lost in straight sets on Wednesday.

With great confidence, the Quebecer could come onto German turf. She beat Lena Papadakis 6-0, 6-1 on Monday, spending 54 minutes on the pitch. Unimpressed, Fernandez, who was ninth, didn’t stand a chance and won 7:5, 6:2. Their previous clash had ended very differently, as then-17-year-old Lavalloise surprised Blinkova in the first round of qualifying for Cincinnati in 2020.

The two players have come a long way since then, but this time it was the 39th player in the world to have the upper hand. Mistakes from Fernandez allowed the Russian to capitalize on 17 break points. She stole the serve from the 20-year-old athlete five times.

Blinkova, who is at the highest rank of her career, has an appointment with No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the next round.

On Tuesday, the Canadian Bianca Andreescu had to admit defeat in two small sets in her second duel of the competition.

Fernandez, the 96th hitter in the WTA, hasn’t won a straight game since May. At the Moroccan tournament, in Roland-Garros and in Bad Homburg, she lost in the second round.
