Mitchell Marner had a goal and an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs avoided elimination and handed the Florida Panthers a 2-1 loss on Wednesday.

Led 3-1 by the Panthers, the series continues on Friday night in Toronto.

Marner was instrumental in William Nylander’s power-play goal at 3:29 in the middle.

Nylander hadn’t scored in their last seven games. Patrolling in front of the opponent’s goal, he gave his team a 1-0 lead with a backhand just past the right post.

The puck turned towards him after being deflected against a knee by official Jon McIsaac as Michael Bunting tried to send the puck across the ice.

Marner then hit with a wrist shot around the blue line at 10:03 into the third period.

Sam Reinhart set the tension at 12:14 by knocking Joseph Woll out of the slot on a power play.

Positioned on the left maul, Matthew Tkachuk played a short pass and Reinhart pressed a shot into the promised land, which was initially partially stopped.

Woll made 24 saves, one more than Sergei Bobrovsky.

Woll made his first playoff start of his career.

Marner and Tkachuk have led by 11 assists since the start of the playoffs, level on points with Edmonton Oilers’ Evan Bouchard.

The last time Toronto was swept in Formula Four of the Seven, victory came in 1979 by the Montreal Canadiens.

The Panthers have never managed a sweep.

The Maple Leafs are playing in the second round for the first time since 2004 and have lost their last three home games.
