WINNIPEG — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will address members of the Ukraine-Canadian Congress in Winnipeg this morning.
He is also expected to receive a formal request from the Manitoba government for more federal money to help Ukrainians flee the war.
Prime Minister Heather Stefanson says Manitoba is fortunate to have welcomed nearly 12,000 Ukrainians since the Russian invasion began last February. But she says she needs more money to provide these newcomers with housing, health care, education and other needs.
Ms Stefanson says Manitoba has received more than 10% of all Ukrainian refugees coming to Canada, even though the province represents only 4% of Canada’s population.
Premier Stefanson and her federal counterpart are both scheduled to speak at the opening of the three-day Congress in Winnipeg.
“They are not declared refugees and do not have refugee status that normally comes with federal funds,” Ms Stefanson denounced in an interview Thursday.
