Even though Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes was unable to land promising goalie Yaroslav Askarov, fans can take comfort in the fact that Jacob Fowler is viewed by team managers as the man who will take them to the promised land.
“Don’t forget Jacob Fowler,” TVA Sports informant Renaud Lavoie warned on BPM Sports radio on Monday.
According to Lavoie, the young man who arrived overweight at his first development camp with the team is now unrecognizable.
“He listened to the recommendations of the coaching group. You wonder if he’s the same guy because he’s in such great shape right now,” Lavoie shouted. “Take a photo of him a year ago and compare it today.”
According to our reporter, it is almost a formality that Fowler will conquer the number one spot in Montreal in a few years.
“This is the future of the Montreal Canadiens,” Lavoie predicted. He is the one who will be number one in three or four years. In the eyes of the Canadiens’ executives, he is the one who will take this team to the promised land.
“It would have been inconvenient if we had to look for another young goalie with Samuel Montembeault, Cayden Primeau and especially Fowler in the organization.”
Fowler, a third-round pick (69th overall) of the Habs in 2023, had a fantastic season with Boston College in the NCAA in 2023-24, compiling a 32-6-1 record, a 2.14 goals-against average and a .926 efficiency rating. He nearly won the championship in his first collegiate season, losing 2-0 to the University of Denver in the Frozen Four finals.
With his presence during the interview sessions at the Combine in Buffalo, Fowler also stole the show in the behind-the-scenes video of the draft that the Canadiens shared last year.
