Earlier this week, we reported that the KHL had announced significant changes that could have a major impact on many prospects playing in Russia.
In fact, as reported Hockey News HubStarting next season, the KHL will introduce a new formula and gain its independence by strengthening the Russian ice hockey system and regular direct interaction with the Ministry of Sports.
This league distances itself from the IIHF and will continue to respect the contracts of other leagues while benefiting from greater flexibility in the transfer protocol for players playing in the KHL.
In addition, as we mentioned in the article above, the old protocol required players who wanted to be transferred to obtain an IIHF transfer card through the international department of the Ice Hockey Federation of the Russian Federation and cooperation with national federations.
However, thanks to this new law, KHL clubs no longer require a transfer card for players moving to other leagues such as the NHL.
In addition, Bettman Round teams can simply reach a financial agreement with Russian organizations to add a player to their ranks.
Against this background, the Montreal Canadiens could benefit from the services of the new member of the organization sooner than expected: the fifth overall pick in the last NHL Draft, Ivan Demidov.
Aside from that, BPM Sports used this change in the law to return to the topic.
Can’t we see that everyone obviously has this idea in their head that Ivan Demidov will come to North America sooner? For his own development, a season in the KHL is actually not the end of the world. I would be happy either way… The important thing is that he doesn’t end up playing in the MHL. That would be different. […] But we still have to let him play. We know that you get better when you face the best. For me it is important that Demidov plays at a good level next year. Of course, with the Canadians we want the young man to take on good responsibility.

Still in the same segment, the hosts insist that Ivan Demidov should not undergo the same medical treatment as the former Habs defender. Alexander Romanovwhile the latter, to his great dismay, had decided to stay in the KHL.
We were all looking forward to seeing his development. He had been outstanding at the World Junior Hockey Championships, we said he would play an important role in the KHL. He didn’t play!

Against this background, however, the General Director of the Habs, Kent Hughesmight be tempted to repatriate Demidov to Montreal so that he can develop further in North America.
Although it would be surprising if he ended up with the Canadian in the near future, he could possibly wear the colours of the Laval rocket sooner than expected.
However, the idea of seeing him play in the KHL next season unfortunately remains an important option…
It will therefore be interesting to follow this file in the coming weeks!
