No more account sharing, after Netflix, it’s Costco’s turn to stop self-checkout membership card sharing.
Non-members are no longer able to shop at Costco. According to Business Insider, store customers are required to present photo ID at the self-checkout to verify monthly payment for Costco’s subscription.
The company Costco has noticed that many share the Costco card at the time of payment, although this action is not authorized.
It’s an increasingly popular promotion. However, the company cautions that someone who doesn’t pay for the subscription shouldn’t have the same benefits as someone who does.
“We don’t think it’s fair that non-Costco members get the same benefits and pricing as our members,” the company told Insider.
The Privilege membership card at Costco is $60 for two people at the same address. It’s $120 for the Executive Privilege membership card.
With the Business subscription, you can add members for $60 per member.
Costco added that requiring proof of membership at checkout could also reduce the risk of shoplifting.
In Michigan, a Costco has already begun requiring proof of identity when checking out at the self-checkout.
