Ismaël Koné recognized by Soccer Canada

Former CF Montreal Ismaël Koné was named Canada Soccer’s Young Player of the Year 2022 on Tuesday.

The Quebecer was chosen based on his performances and the progress he has shown with the national team over the year.

Remember Koné played in all three of Canada’s games at the last World Cup in Qatar. At the age of 20, he became the youngest Canadian player to wear the maple leaf uniform for the prestigious competition.

“He took part in eight senior internationals, helped Canada win the finals of Concacaf FIFA World Cup qualifiers and scored his first international goal in November,” the association said in a press release.

Koné played a total of 26 Major League Soccer (MLS) games for the Montreal club in 2022, scoring two goals and adding five assists. After his move last December, he will continue his career with Watford FC in the English second division from January.

Simi Awujo received the same award for women. She represented Canada at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022.

“She was particularly involved in the build-up sequence that led to Canada’s winning goal against Australia and another goal against Morocco. She also played in 10 caps for Canada and won a Concacaf youth medal in March when Canada qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and was twice named Player of the Canada Match,” Soccer’s message said Canada.
