Inflation: Prime Minister François Legault does not rule out new aid

Alma – Prime Minister François Legault is not ruling out targeted aid – particularly on housing – for inflation-stricken Quebecers in the next economic update in November.

“We check in detail whether there are people or groups of people who need special help. […] We see that on the housing side, among other things,” explained François Legault in a press conference on Wednesday in Alma.

For the time being, however, there is no question that the government will issue new checks to residents of Quebec, the prime minister said.

This aid could be announced in the government’s next economic update in November.

The prime minister echoed what his finance minister, Eric Girard, said in an interview with La Presse published on Wednesday.

Mr. Legault recalled what he had done to help Quebecers in need. In particular, the government sent checks.

On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada announced that it would keep interest rates at 5%. When questioned on the issue, the prime minister did not want to venture into this area, but nonetheless took the opportunity to expose the Parti Québécois and Québec Solidaire.

“But when I hear Paul St-Pierre Plamondon and Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois say they want to put their hands into an independent organization, I’m there. It’s not a good idea,” the prime minister said.

MPs from the Avenir Québec coalition meet in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean on Thursday and Friday to prepare for the return to parliament, which will take place next week.
